It is already a few years that we have been visiting this deserted land full of agaves. Cabo de Gata has something that gets us, that year after year forces us to lose ourselves in its trails of soil and dust. Perhaps, it is because it is one of the few areas of Spain that is not mass touristic yet. There are no big skyscrapers by the seashore, instead there still are typical white little houses in small fishing villages, which are not really fishing anymore but keep their essence. Little fields lost in the middle of nowhere with their orchards, aloes and bougainvillea covering the walls. We love driving the car touring the county roads by the coast, with a tingling sensation as we go up the slope of the Amethyst viewpoint, taking stopovers in footpaths that take one to a solitary little cove or wandering between Monsul and Genoveses to spend the day in one of the most beautiful coves we have ever seen: Cala Grande. It is difficult to believe that the waters that bathe this desert are those of the Mediterranean, here it seems to be a different sea. The water is crystal clear and fish are roaming free amidst rocks. Do not forget the snorkel if you ever want to stop by. And after getting tanned by saltpeter and the sun there is nothing better than dining fresh fish in the Isleta del Moro, later stopping over JO’s inn, a bike-aficionado pub in the style of the American Route 66 lost in the middle of the desert. Toasting with beer and tequila we promise to return next year.
